Outline
The Cancer Research UK City of London (CoL) Centre collaborative PhD training programme is looking for exceptional science graduates to carry out multi-disciplinary research projects with a focus on cancer biotherapeutics. The Centre brings together researchers from the CRUK centres based at the Francis Crick Institute, UCL, Barts / Queen Mary University of London and King’s College London with the aim to generate innovative biological therapies, diagnostics and stratification strategies working from an evolutionary and immunological perspective.The
The CRUK CoL Centre training programme offers bespoke, high quality scientific & transferable skills training, harnessing the breadth and depth of resources and knowledge across the Centre. Students will participate in an induction week, multi-disciplinary training, cross-institutional research placements and cohort-building activities, including participation in the Centre’s networking workshops and conferences. Moreover, trainees on the programme will benefit from an exciting academic environment underpinned by world-class technical expertise provided via the Centre’s research programmes and infrastructure cores.
Duration and supervision arrangements
PhD students following the four-year CRUK CoL PhD training programme will be based in their primary supervisor’s research group, and have a secondary supervisor from one of the Centre’s other insitutions. Students will register for their PhD at the primary supervisor’s university, or the secondary supervisor’s university if the primary supervisor is based at the Crick. All students will have a three-person thesis committee made up of Centre faculty, that they will meet with regularly to discuss progress and receive guidance and advice.
What is funded
Successful candidates will receive a £21,000 tax-free student stipend (living allowance) per year for 4 years plus payment of university tuition fees.
Eligibility
Due to funding body restrictions only UK / EU nationals are eligible to apply for this programme.The standard CoL PhD programme and studentship academic eligibility criteria are:
- A first/upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent from a non-UK university) in a relevant subject.
- Appropriate research experience as part of, or outside of, an undergraduate or masters degree course in a relevant subject.
- Appropriate English language skills.
