The dean of the Faculty of History with the consent of the Rector of the University of Warsaw, announces a competition for the position of postdoctoral researcher in the field of history in the Department of History of the 20th Century, Faculty of History, University of Warsaw in NCN OPUS-27 research project: “China’s Multiple Pasts: Museums, Colonial History, and Decoloniality in Southeast Asia”
Description of project:
This project strives to examine if and how Overseas Chinese history museums in Southeast Asia offer alternative representations of the past to those found in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). By juxtaposing the nationalist representations embedded in the PRC’s memorialization of Chinese diaspora and those shown in museums in Southeast Asia this project will analyse the diversity of discourses on Chinese past, retrieve the agency of different communities funding the museums, and problematize the application of decolonial theories in museums based outside the Western episteme.
Basic responsibilities and obligations:
1. Conducting research on her/his topic that will be related to history of Overseas Chinese history and its representations in museums in Southeast Asia.
2. Preparing and publishing academic articles/a monograph. At least one academic article should be accepted for publication before the end of the contract.
3. Presenting research findings on international conferences.
4. Assisting PI in organizing an international work shop and editing a collected volume.

1. Fulfilment of the requirements set out in Article 113 of the Law on Higher Education and Science (Journal of Laws of 2024, item 1571, consolidated text)
2. A person may be employed as an assistant professor in a research group if:
a. has a doctoral degree;
b. has significant scientific achievements ;
c. has plans for future research activities;
d. has international experience.
3. PhD degree preferably in the field of 19th and/or 20th century Overseas Chinese history in Thailand/Malaysia/Indonesia, or in the field of global history with focus on Southeast Asia. PhD degree must be obtained not later than 7 years before starting the fellowship.
4. Fluency in spoken and written English.
5. Publication record commensurate to the career level.
6. Knowledge of at least one of the following languages: Chinese, Thai, Malay, Indonesian.
7. Experience in conducting research in of museum studies and/or a proven interest in heritage studies will be an advantage.
In addition, we expect:
1. Interest in looking for new funding opportunities and to apply to new research grants together with the PI.
2. If hired, we expect the University of Warsaw to be the primary workplace for the successful candidate.

The results will be announced by the 15.07.2025, and candidates will be informed by email.
The search procedure may include interviews with the chosen candidates and a public lecture intended for students to test the candidates' teaching skills.
The committee will evaluate the academic record taking into account the period of its acquisition, including any breaks in academic work due to, for example, maternity leave.
The search procedure follows the procedure determined in the Statute of the University of Warsaw and the relevant rules of the University of Warsaw and Faculty of History.
