Description

The Universidad of Valladolid wishes to attract talented, ambitious and experienced researchers at the post-doctoral level by supporting them as applicants in the preparation of a proposal to be submitted to the MSCA-IF-2020 call.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The University of Valladolid is one of the most important centers of Higher Education in Spain. It counts on four campuses, over 100 degrees, 29 doctoral programs (14 with Honor Mention) and 68 postgraduate degrees, accredited international collaborations and prestigious research Centers. On average, nearly 25,000 students enroll each year, counts on more than 2,500 teachers and nearly 1,000 people dealing with administration tasks and other services.

The UVA manages around 180/year research projects financed through competitive public R+D+i calls (European, national or regional), and approximately 500 contracts and agreements aimed at the transfer of knowledge and technology, amounting to an average value of over fifteen million Euros per annum. Moreover, its researchers take part in almost 250 further projects and contracts managed by other institutions.

The research team comprises 8 members, including 6 PhD engineers and 2 MD from 3 institutions: University of Valladolid, Polytechnic University of Madrid, and Hospital Clínico Universitario de Valladolid. Some of the members have been collaborating in hemodynamics problems for more than 15 years. The group is multidisciplinary and covers different clinical and engineering aspects needed to carry out the project proposed here. The members coming from the Hospital Clínico Universitario are experts in structural interventions and, as such, they will be involved in the design pertinence and evaluation of the flow enhancer proposed in the study, choosing the pertinent geometries and the physiological flow and pressures. They will also be involved in the analysis of the results seeking a practical application derived from the study.

Regarding the engineering group, they provide complementary technical skills, useful to achieve the objectives proposed. There are experts in physical models in incompressible fluids specially in biofluids and mechanical devices. And experts that have great experience in numerical models applied to blood flow and 3D models acquired from medical imaging.

RESEARCH/PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the world. In recent years, the usefulness of computational fluid mechanics supported by new imaging or diagnostic techniques has been demonstrated for the study of these diseases, and for improving treatment and prevention. This project will focus on the development of a methodology for the design of artificial pneumatic muscles to treat patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, mostly children, who have undergone Fontan surgery. Thus, it comprehends the study of fluid dynamic optimization of a cardiovascular flow with complex boundary conditions. The further application of this methodology will contribute to the improvement of the quality of life and life expectancy of these patients.

Description of the offer:

The Marie Curie fellow will be fully integrated in the research group, benefiting from a range of research, academic and transversal activities, including: 1) Contribution to research projects, 2) Involvement in international collaborations, 3) Participation in supervision of Ph.D. and Master theses, 4) Attendance of international conferences and meetings. 5) Collaboration in outreach activities.
