Offer Description
Deadline for applications: 31/08/2025
Application process open*
The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit, Science- and Technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution, based in Cyprus and governed by an acclaimed Board of Directors. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres, namely:
- The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC)
- The Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC)
- The Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC)
- The Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C)
- The Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC)
Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s scientific ethos.
The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a new faculty member at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor in the broader area of regional atmospheric emissions and modelling, to join the Institute’s CARE-C Centre of Excellence on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassa’s Campus.
The successful candidate will strengthen the Institute's expertise in atmospheric modelling and environmental data analysis, primarily focusing on developing and applying numerical models for emissions, atmospheric transport and dispersion, and chemical processes. The role involves analyzing and integrating various environmental datasets—including emission inventories, in situ measurements, and remote sensing observations (e.g., from satellites)—to support atmospheric modelling studies that investigate connections to air quality, climate, and public health.
The new faculty should contribute to the research dynamics of the Environmental Predictions Department (EPD) of CARE-C and CyI by pursuing cross-cutting collaborations with related areas, including atmospheric observations, numerical techniques, climate modelling and data science.
Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:
- Develop and apply state-of-the-art numerical modelling tools of air pollution emissions/transport/concentrations across the Mediterranean - Middle East and various time scales, aligned with the regional focus of CARE-C and (inter)national policies (e.g., EU Green Deal, Paris Agreement, national priorities).
- Connect atmospheric observations performed by Environmental Observations Department (EOD) researchers with the modelling work across different departments of CARE-C, to integrate environmental data into studies of air quality and public health effects.
- Advise and support of national and international bodies and agencies in the reporting and evaluation of emissions, exposure, and mitigation measures aimed at improving air quality and avoiding socioeconomic costs.
- Provide career opportunities for students and prospects for collaboration projects and funding at both national and international levels (e.g., EU).
