The Department of Marketing at Bournemouth University (BU) is looking for a post-doctoral candidate to apply for the Marie Sklodowska–Curie Individual Fellowship (MSCA-IF 2019) in marketing and focusing on the repair of trust in insurance. The fellowship will typically last 24 months.

Project: When customers buy insurance they are buying a promise of help in the future when things go wrong. If that promise is to believed, customers need to trust their insurer. However, the UK financial services sector has experienced a number of reputational challenges which have damaged consumer trust in insurance. Insurers need to rebuild that trust if they are to survive and prosper. The aim of this research is to understand consumers’ response to the trust repair mechanisms adopted by individual insurers and the sector as a whole.

Whilst management and marketing disciplines contain a rich stream of theory that account for trust repair between the firm and consumer, in contrast, research into trust repair by multiple stakeholders within an industry is sparse. Indeed, no single trust-repair mechanism within the extant literature offers a solution and it has been argued that there is a need for a combination of multiple approaches. This study will adopt an integrative framework for trust repair that seeks to identify the actions that stakeholders have taken to repair trust and how these actions have influenced consumer attitudes towards and trust in the company and wider industry sector.

Host Institution: Bournemouth University’s research culture is ambitious, inclusive and innovative, focusing in particular on the societal impact of research and the co-creation of new knowledge with students. The Faculty of Management, where the Marketing Department is located, has 8 research centres including customer behaviour, regulation/finance and management. BU and the Marketing Department have extensive experience of securing funding from Europe. Members of the Marketing Department  have a wealth of expertise in consumer behaviour and strong links with the insurance and wider financial services sector.

Project supervisor: The successful post doctoral fellow will be supervised by Dr Julie Robson who is an Associate Professor in Marketing at Bournemouth University. Her expertise is in financial services marketing, particularly general insurance marketing and her current research is on corporate branding and trust repair.

Application process: Interested candidates are invited to email Dr Julie Robson at jrobson@bournemouth.ac.uk. Please include the reference ‘MCSIF 2019’ in the title of your email and attach a CV, a motivation letter, your MSc marks, as well as a 1 page research proposal.

Note: Candidates will receive support from the supervisor, as well as a professional bid writer, to prepare and submit their application with Bournemouth University to the next MSCA-IF call for proposals.
