PhD Student (m/f/d) on the topic "Late radiation injuries after proton therapy in the brain"
A member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, the HZDR employs about 1,200 people. The Center's focus is on interdisciplinary research in the areas energy, health and matter.
At the Institute of Radiooncology – OncoRay scientists specializing in medicine, physics, biology and IT work together to substantially improve the treatment of cancer by administering radiation therapy that is biologically personalized and technically optimized.
As part of the Institute, the Section of Translational Radiooncology, invites applications as PhD Student (m/f/d) on the topic "Late radiation injuries after proton therapy in the brain".
The position will be available from 1 August 2020. The employment contract is limited to three years.
The position is embedded in a cooperation project within the NCRO (National Center for Radiooncology) including research groups in Heidelberg and Dresden. The project aims to clarify the role of two postulated leading causes of late radiation effects in the brain: varying regional radiation sensitivity and the variability of relative biological effectiveness of proton radiation.
# imaging (MRI, CT) of small animals after radiation with photons and protons
# tissue analysis using advanced microscopy, histology and omics-analysis
# working in cooperation with partners: processing of microscopic images including coregistration of histological data with anatomical imaging and dose simulations, correlation of biological endpoints with applied physical parameters (e.g. linear energy transfer), 3D-histology
# very good university degree (Master/Diploma) in biology, biophysics, biotechnology, biochemistry, medical physics, medicine (or related fields)
# previous experience in radiation biology, neuroscience, biological imaging or microscopic techniques would be advantageous
# Interest in translational studies on experimental models including readiness to perform in vivo experiments (FELASA B is a plus)
# basic knowledge on histological and cell biology techniques
# good communication skills plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research
# ability to work within a multidisciplinary research team with affinity to find technique solutions
# proficiency in spoken and written English
