The project will combine methodological development and mechanistic studies of phytoplankton photosynthesis based on genetic, biochemical and biophysical approaches.
The applicant is expected to:
- contribute to the design of the project,
- develop the methodologies,
- perform the experiments,
- analyze and communicate the data,
- manage the collaborations,
- write scientific reports (publications).
We are looking for a highly-motivated Post-doctoral Research Scientist with knowledge in the fields of microalgae biology, photosynthesis, biophysics and chloroplast regulation to join the laboratory of « Chloroplast Biology and Light-sensing in Microalgae” at the Institut de Biologie Physico-Chimique in Paris – France (UMR7141 CNRS/Sorbonne Université, http://www.ibpc.fr/UMR7141). This laboratory is dedicated to the study of light-driven processes (photosynthesis and photoperception) and chloroplast biology. The post-doctoral fellow will be involved in a project funded by the ERC (Starting Grant PhotoPHYTOMICS) aiming to study the biotic competition between phytoplankton species. She/He will develop methodologies to study the photosynthesis of several species in a mixture and use this to infer allelopathic interaction targeting photosynthesis, as well as competition for nutrients. Le post-doctorant(e) sera impliqué(e) dans un projet financé par l'ERC (Starting Grant PhotoPHYTOMICS) visant à étudier la compétition biotique entre espèces du phytoplancton. Elle/il développera une nouvelle méthodologie permettant de mesurer la photosynthèse de plusieurs espèces dans un mélange et l'utilisera pour étudier les interactions allélopathiques ciblant la photosynthèse, ainsi que la compétition pour les nutriments. Cette recherche comportera des investigations sur le terrain.
The Institute of Physico-Chemical Biology (IBPC) created in 1930 by the Edmond de Rothschild Foundation is a research center promoting multidisciplinary research in all fields of biology. The structural, genetic and physico-chemical bases of living organisms are explored at different levels of integration, from the molecule to the whole organism. The post-doc will integrate the laboratory of “Chloroplast Biology and Light-sensing in Microalgae” (UMR7141) directed by Dr. Angela Falciatore. The laboratory comprises around twenty permanent staff members (researchers, lecturer-researchers, engineers, technicians and administration) and around fifteen non-permanent collaborators, graduate students and post-doctorates. Current work in the lab explores the biology, evolution and ecology of microalgae by focusing on different model organisms (e.g., Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and diatoms) and on ecological relevant phytoplanktonic species, investigated with eco-physiology, biophysical, biochemical, genomic and genetic approaches.
PhD in biological sciences and demonstrable experience in biophysics techniques applied to photosynthesis of plants or algae. Previous experience in genetics, biochemistry or oceanography will be strongly appreciated. The post-doc will need strong organizational and team working abilities to take projects from conception to completion, as well as verbal and written communication skills in English (French is not mandatory). The level of his(her) CV and publication list will have to be compatible with the requirements of national and international post-doctoral programs.
The position is funded by the ERC Starting Grant PhotoPHYTOMICS, and is fixed term for 2 years with the possibility of extension up to 3 years. The position can start at any time after October 1st 2020.
