Are you a highly motivated researcher in the area of aquatic nanotoxicology? Would you like to be a key player in the development of new tools for environmental risk assessment of nanomaterials? INL is seeking a qualified researcher for a collaborative project in the area of econanosafety whose main responsibility will be to support the Water Quality Research Group at INL to develop new tools and methods to evaluate the release, fate and toxicity of nanomaterials to aquatic organisms. The selected candidate will be working with an experienced group of researchers in nanomaterials and new developed microfluidic devices and sensors.


Job Role & Key Responsibilities

The selected junior fellow will undertake the following main activities and responsibilities:

  • Characterization of nanomaterials in environmental matrix (freshwater, seawater and biota)
  • Preparation of samples from aquatic organisms to investigate the presence of nanoparticles and possible effects using mainly electron and optical microscopies;
  • Perform regular toxicity testing of NPs;
  • Carry out the aquatic organism’s maintenance and culture, prepare contaminated dispersions and samples from aquaculture water, and carry out sample treatment and preparation for analysis;
  • Collaborate with international multidisciplinary teams;
  • Produce several technical and scientific documentation and work planning.



Job Requirements


Candidates should meet the following requirements:



  • MSc Degree in biology, environmental sciences, nanotechnology or similar.


Experience and Technical Skills


-  Experience in aquatic nanotoxicology;

- Experience in electron and optical microscopies: biological samples and nanomaterials preparation and investigation using confocal microscopy, TEM and SEM with EDX;

-  Experience in nanomaterials characterization and analytical techniques such as ICP-OES will be very positively evaluated;

-   Experience in microfluidics in PDMS and PMMA is highly recommended;

-   Experience in sensors will be positively evaluated;

-  Good command of spoken and written English language.

  • Strong motivation to work both independently and as part of a team in an interdisciplinary environment, with the ability to pay close attention to detail and to meet deadlines;
  • Team work spirit;
  • Good communication skills;
  • “Hands-on” approach together with a high commitment in respecting working deadlines;
  • Highly organised and dynamic.



Excellent communication skills in English are required since it’s the working language of INL.



          The work plan will be developed at the INL under the                scientific guidance of Begoña Espiña.

          Duration of the contract

The total duration of the employment contract shall be 30 months and may be renewed based on the performance of the individual and the duration of the project. The expected starting date is January 2021.
