Nome progetto: Materials and energy recovery technologies by combined treatment of municipal solid waste and sewage sludge
Idea progettuale: The project idea aims to evaluate the feasibility of an integrated management strategy for Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and Sewage Sludge (SS) through experimentation of different innovative technologies, aimed at optimising material and energy recovery and minimising landfill disposal. The current legislation (Legislative Decree 152/2006) requires the achievement, to date, of a minimum collection rate of 65%. The waste collected separately is destined for organisations for its proper valorization, indicated by the Italian legislator as “Consorzi di Filiera”. Residual waste, called “unsorted”, is treated differently in the Italian regions, although the most common technological chain, as in Apulia, provides for Mechanical-Biological Treatment (MBT). To date, it is evident the difficulty at national level in reaching 65% of separate waste collection. The management of this transition phase requires the introduction of new technological solutions that, in compliance with the principles of the circular economy, allow the closure of the waste cycle. At the same time, one of the major current critical issues in the field of the municipal wastewater treatment cycle is the sludge disposal. The treatment of sewage sludge in the MSW management cycle is an interesting solution. In this context, the proposal aims at assessing the technical, environmental, economic and social feasibility of a new integrated MSW and SS management strategy. In particular, having as reference the MBT plants currently in operation, different innovative technological recovery solutions (e.g. supercritical water gasification, combination of anaerobic digestion and composting, biostabilisation in enriched air, stabilisation/solidification treatment with geopolymers, alternative thermal treatments to combustion) will be tested at pilot level or at full scale.
