Microfluidics is a rapidly evolving technology that enables precise manipulation of fluids at the submillimetre length scale. Many of these microfluidics applications require inline sensing of different process parameters. Therefore the integration of sensors to monitor the different process parameters are indispensable.
The PhD student will develop novel microsized multiparameter sensors which measure electrical and thermal properties of fluidics in microchannels to assess crucial process parameters. These built-in thermal and electrical (potentiometric, amperometric, impedimetric) sensors will allow to monitor fluidic handling in real-time, increasing in this way the reliability of microfluidic devices.
The project involves the development, modelling, fabrication, and optimization of the sensing components to be used in microfluidic systems. Research will focus on new materials, fabrication techniques, and optimizing existing and novel applications for the developed micro-sized sensors. You will work on the creation of a multi-parameter flow measurement system. The sensors should be able to perform “independent” measurements of different flow properties such as temperature, flow velocity, density, viscosity, ionic strength and solid loading. Furthermore, the integration of these sensors will allow for fault detection mechanisms inside the microfluidic chip such as clogging, etc.
This project is a research collaboration between the IMO-IMOMEC research institute of Hasselt University and IMEC Leuven. IMO-IMOMEC has an integrated and intensive collaboration with IMEC regarding the domains of renewable energy and advanced diagnostics. The current position is situated within the advanced diagnostics topic and will be carried out in the research group Biomedical Device Engineering from IMO-IMOMEC and the Life Sciences department of IMEC Leuven.

You will be appointed and paid as PhD student. PhD scholarship for 2 years, renewable for 2 years following a positive interim evaluation.

- Master of Science or Engineering in physics, materials sciences, electronics, electro-mechanics (or equivalent).
- You are able to work independently and are eager to take initiative and responsibility.
- You have the necessary qualities to function within an international team. Very good verbal and written communication skills in English are required, and international experience (Erasmus, internship abroad) is an asset.
- You are motivated to contribute to the didactic and outreach tasks of the faculty of Engineering Technology and you are able to arouse students' enthusiasm
- You have excellent computer skills and can manage data properly, are able to present scientific results, and have excellent reporting skills.
- You are well-organized and dedicated to performing a practical experiment in the best way, ensuring that technical instruments are employed / calibrated in the right way.
- A first scientific publication is an asset.
- You have a problem solving attitude and a strong desire to stay up to date with recent developments. You are able to work independently and are eager to take initiative and responsibility.
- You have a strong background/experience in at least two of the following theoretical disciplines: impedance based sensing, microfluidics, device physics, numerical simulations, finite element modelling.
We are looking for enthusiastic candidates with a ‘drive’ for applied research. He or she has a demonstrable interest in sensor design/construction, multiphysics modelling and signal processing. The candidate should have an MSc degree in Applied Physics, Engineering, or the equivalent. The PhD position is firmly embedded in an engineering environment, but it is expected from the candidate to interact with chemical engineers, material and life-sciences scientists. Good communication skills in English are required.
