PHOTONICS IS ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING AND INNOVATIVE AREAS OF APPLIED RESEARCH. HHI HAS ESTABLISHED A LEADING POSITION IN OPTICAL DATA TRANSMISSION AND IS INCREASINGLY USING THIS EXPERTISE FOR NOVEL PHOTONIC SOLUTIONS IN SENSOR TECHNOLOGY. IN THIS WAY, HHI HAS ESTABLISHED A WORLD-LEADING POSITION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF OPTOELECTRONIC COMPONENTS AND SYSTEMS FOR THE GENERATION AND DETECTION OF TERAHERTZ (THZ-) RADIATION. IN CLOSE COOPERATION WITH INDUSTRIAL PARTNERS AND INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH INSTITUTES, THE COMPONENTS AND SYSTEMS DEVELOPED AT HHI ARE USED IN INDUSTRIAL, NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING. RESEARCH ASSOCIATE*
TERAHERTZ SENSORS AND IMAGING

Your Task

In this activity you will research and develop novel receivers and receiver arrays for Terahertz imaging within the Marie Skłodowska Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) TERAOPTICS (Terahertz Photonics for Communications, Space, Security, Radio-Astronomy, and Material Science). This ITN is a European research project involving four universities, two research institutes, three small and medium-sized enterprises and two industrial partners. Within this project, a doctoral thesis on “Photonic Terahertz Receiver Arrays for Sensor Technology and Imaging” is to be prepared. The goal is the development and implementation of indium phosphide based broadband photomixers for the coherent detection of terahertz radiation in the frequency range from 50 GHz to 3 THz. Different approaches will be analyzed and evaluated by simulations and subsequently realized within the integration platforms available at HHI. In addition, a three-month research stay with an industrial partner will give you a profound insight into the challenges and application fields of non-destructive testing and imaging with terahertz radiation. Within the Marie Skłodowska Curie Innovative Training Network, you will also participate in regular training courses, seminars and summer schools where you can establish contacts in the photonics industry as well as with international scientists from the participating partner organizations.

What we expect from you

  • Diploma or master’s degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering or a related field
  • Extensive knowledge in solid state physics and photonics
  • Knowledge in the field of III/V or silicon semiconductors
  • Experience in programming with Matlab or Python
  • Ideally first experience with high frequency simulation environments like Ansys HFFS or CST Studio
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office
  • Very good command of English, both verbal and written
  • Due to the regulations of the Innovative Training Network (ITN), you must have spent at least 24 months outside Germany in the last three years.

The terms of your contract are based on to European Commission's Marie Curie fellowship scheme.
The working time consists of 39 hours per week.
The position is initially limited for 3 years.
