The Department of Psychology announces a PhD position for a period of 3 years. The position is connected to the PhD programme in Social Sciences with specialization in psychology at the Faculty of Social- and Educational Sciences. The Faculty will be the employer. The working place will be at the Department of Psychology and you will report to the Head of Department.
The Department of Psychology is looking for a candidate who wants to carry out research and formulate innovative themes and challenges within the field of Developmental Psychology. The PhD project focuses on the relation between parenting and children’s emotional development. A core question is: How can parents promote children’s proactive behaviours towards their own emotion regulation? Theoretically, this project is funded on theories of agency, such as the Self-Determination Theory. The PhD project will involve a series of empirical studies including data from the Trondheim Early Secure Study and various other sources of data from parents and their children.
Duties of the position
The PhD candidate must realize his/her PhD project within a period of 3 years. The core of the PhD activities are the design and execution of empirical studies and the dissemination of his/her work via international journals and conferences.
Required selection criteria
The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in Psychology or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.
In the assessment of the candidates the following qualifications will be emphasized:
- Grades from the master’s degree/cand.psychol.
- Research relevant experience such as publications and being involved in research
- Special interest in child development, parenting, and emotion regulation; experience in one or more of these topics is a surplus
- Good written and oral English and Norwegian language skills
- Competence in quantitative research methodologies is a surplus
- Motivated to engage in international exchange
Personal characteristics such as eagerness to learn, creative and critical thinking, conscientiousness, perseverance, excellent cooperation and independent working skills, autonomous motivation to contribute to excellent research and a good work environment will be emphasized.

Salary and conditions
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 3 years.
Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in in Social sciences with specialization in Psychology (https://www.ntnu.edu/studies/phsv/psychology) within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
About the application

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal suitability.
