The recent detections of gravitational wave sources has shown the scientific potential of gravitational wave astronomy. In order to enhance this potential we will work to enhance the sensitivity of gravitational wave detectors at low frequencies, where the newtonian noise is the main obstacle. The main goal of the project is to investigate this noise and to work on algorithms to compensate it, so that we can discover more massive black holes and detect binary neutron stars earlier.

The key responsibilities include:

  1. Seismic characterization of the VIRGO site, preparation and installation of seismic sensor networks.

  2. Data analysis form networks of seismic sensors.

  3. Work on algorithms for newtonian noise compensation

  4. Writing and publishing scientific papers.

  5. Participation in conferences and working visits connected with installation and conservation of seismic detector networks.

Benefits

Employment at the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw for 10 months.

Work in the international team in collaboration with VIRGO and NIKHEF. Participation in the VIRGO and LIGO collaboration. Possibility to develop own research ideas.

Selection process

The shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview.
