Doctoral Student (Assistant) position in the Center for Marine Research, Laboratory for Marine Nanotechnology and Biotechnology.
The PhD student will be associated with the Croatian Science Foundation project „Understanding the physico-chemical behaviour and toxicity of silver, copper and plastic NANOparticles as Emerging Materials of Concern in Coastal waters – NANO-EMC2“. This interdisciplinary project encompasses research on determining the physicochemical behaviour and fate of a range of nanomaterials in brackish and marine waters and their impact on selected organisms that live in these aquatic environments.
The successful candidate will work on the behavioural response of mussels by valve gaping function as filtration proxy measurements after model microplastic and nanoparticles laboratory mussel treatments and filed studies. Further, standardised and adapted biochemical tests will be used to determine a range of mussel toxicity endpoints from whole organism fitness to cellular oxidative stress. The PhD candidate will be expected to master all of these techniques and develop a broad range of key transferrable skills in the field of environmental research. In parallel, the PhD candidate will be expected to enroll in the doctoral study program in Oceanology at the Faculty of Science of the University of Zagreb.
Masters degree (or equivalent) in the field of biology or agriculture (fisheries) or interdisciplinary graduate study in environmental sciences.

Appointment to an Assistant position is for a temporary period of 5 years, with a probationary period of 6 months. Doctoral students are required to enroll in doctoral studies in academic year 2020/2021.

It is considered advantageous for PhD candidates who have the following: awards and prizes for excellence in studying and research work, participation in scientific research work, co-authorship of papers, personal presentations at scientific meetings, proficiency in speaking and writing English, experience in marine research (ecotoxicology, ecophysiology, aquaculture) and diving desirable, willingness for field work, category B driving license. Preference will be given to candidates who have shown interest for work in the field of environmental and marine sciences.
