The group of Dr. Matthias Barz at the Institute of Organic Chemistry at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz has an opening for 1 PhD position in synthetic polymer chemistry. The PhD student will join the EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network, a consortium of high class academic and private institutions across Europe. The overall aim of this project is to develop diagnostic tools for the early stage detection of Parkinson’s Diseases (PD), which may allow extension to novel therapies in the long term.

Job description

The research topic in this position involves the development of novel polymeric materials based on polypept(o)ides for clearing of antibodies from the blood stream or enhancing bioavailibility of low molecular weight drugs. The PhD student will work on an interdisciplinary project between polymer synthesis and characterization, nano science science, radio chemistry, biology and radio imaging.

Objectives: 1) Synthesis and characterization of polypept(o)ide based nanoparticles with controlled surface fuctionality; 2) ex vivo or in vitro evaluation of systems with respect to encapsulation chemistry or bioorthogonal conjugation chemistry; 3) transfer of efficient systems into PD diseases models in collaboration with project partners.

 

Qualifications of the candidate

The candidates should have an excellent Master degree in chemistry or Materials science with a strong background synthetic polymer chemistry. Moreover, knowledge in materials characterization (light scattering, SEM/TEM, AFM) are required. Besides well-founded chemical expertise, a keen interest in the application of material science to medical needs is expected. We are looking for team players that are capable to independently plan and execute their research tasks within a larger interdisciplinary project consortium, which combines chemists, physicists, biologists and medical doctors. Candidates should have the ability to think creatively and combine an excellent command of the English language with strong communication skills. Highly motivated students are strongly encouraged to apply.

In order to be eligible for this position, the candidate must meet the EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie ESR eligibility criteria. At the time the appointment is made, the candidate must have under four years (full-time equivalent) research experience, measured from the date when they obtained their degree. The candidates must not have spent more than 12 months in Germany in the three years immediately prior to the recruitment date.

 

Our offer

The position is for 3 years. The contract will be within the framework of the Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie European Training Network PET-AlphaSy, whose objective is to train a new generation of early stage researchers in the field of early stage detection of Parkinson’s Diseases.

Starting date will be 01.03.2019.
