Offer Description

JOB ENVIRONMENT:

Institut Mines-Telecom is the leading public group of engineering and management Grandes Écoles in France. Comprising eight public Grandes Écoles and two subsidiary schools, Institut Mines-Télécom fosters and develops a rich ecosystem of economic, academic, and institutional partners, all dedicated to higher education, research, innovation and economic development. As a member of Institut Mines-Télécom, Mines Saint-Étienne carries out missions of education, training, research, innovation, industrial transfer, and scientific culture. With 2,500 students, 500 staff members, and a budget of €50 million, it operates on three campuses dedicated to i) the industries of the future, ii) health and well-being, and iii) sovereignty in digital technology and microelectronics industries. It is ranked in the top 15 of French graduates schools of engineering and in the Top 500 of world universities. The 2023-2027 strategy of Mines Saint-Étienne contributes to that of Institut Mines-Telecom. Its ambitions are:

• To support and accompany ecological, digital, and generational transitions and train the actors involved in these transitions,

• To foster national and European sovereignty in microelectronics and digital technologies. To support this strategy, Mines Saint-Étienne is recruiting a junior faculty member in Materials Chemistry for Gas Sensors.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The position available is for a Maitre de Conférences (permanent junior Faculty member) in Materials Chemistry for Gas Sensors, assigned to the SPIN Training and Research Center. SPIN (« Sciences des Processus Industriels et Naturels ») center is a research, teaching and technology transfer center recognized for its expertise in Process Engineering applied to granular media, at the service of innovation for industrial companies facing the digital and environmental transition. More precisely, the successful candidate will reinforce the theme dealing with gas sensors and associated microsystems for applications in the field of industrial processes intensification, control of environmental standards and health, in the PTSI (“Procédés de Transformation des Solides et Instrumentation”) department. The recruited person will align his/her research project with that of the Laboratoire Georges Friedel Research Unit The Laboratoire Georges Friedel (LGF) is a Joint Research Unit of the CNRS (UMR 5307). It brings together all the potential of Mines Saint-Étienne in the fields of materials, mechanics and processes. The position will be assigned to the "Surfaces, Reactivity and Functionalization" team where the activities focus on the reactivity of surfaces and interfaces in materials in contact with the environment, and on the functionalization of surfaces in order to obtain specific properties or functions.

Rationale for recruitment:

The successful candidate will teach in the ‘Ingénieur Civil des Mines’ Master’s degree in Engineering, for both supervised and practical courses, in the core curriculum of Physics and in some elective courses related to the chemistry of materials. He.she will also participate in the Master of Science’s degree «Process Engineering and Artificial Intelligence» and the Erasmus Mundus Master’s degree «Multiphase Systems for Sustainable Engineering», as well as in the continuing education master's degree for energy efficiency, and in lifelong learning activities.

Research context and objectives

The host team works on improving the selectivity and sensitivity of gas sensors, their miniaturization and cost reduction in order to meet the challenges of environmental and industrial transitions as well as health and social issues (air quality for example). The development of innovative gas detection technologies for health and environment will be at the heart of the activities of the recruited person. Thus, the skills to be strengthened concern the physicochemical and material aspects for the preparation and functionalization of gas sensors as well as the understanding of the mechanisms of solid-gas interactions.

The position is based on the campus of Saint-Étienne. Participation to activities operated by the other campuses of Mines Saint-Etienne and international collaborations are encouraged
