Project title:

Nencki-EMBL Center of Excellence for Neural Plasticity and Brain Disorders: BRAINCITY

Project is carried out within the MAB/IRA programme of the Foundation for Polish Science

Project description:

The research will focus on synaptic adaptations that occur during the formation of appetitive memory – the memory about pleasurable events. The key brain area in appetitive (and aversive) learning is the amygdala. In this project, therefore, we will combine state-of-the-art imaging techniques, behavioral paradigms and electrophysiological recordings to visualize and study the function of synaptic projections within the amygdalar complex, including the analysis of the formation and fate of so called silent synapses. We aim on locating and characterizing neurons that respond to natural and addictive rewards.

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Confocal imaging
  2. Animal (mice) behavioral tests
  3. Electrophysiological recordings
  4. Supervision of MSc students

Profile of candidates/requirements:

  1. Deep interest in neurosciences and laboratory work
  2. M.Sc. degree, or equivalent, in molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, physics/biophysics, biology, psychology, medical, veterinary sciences or similar
  3. Status of a PhD student at the time of starting the work in the project
  4. Exceptional motivation for the scientific research (demonstrated via publications, references of the candidate's thesis tutor)
  5. Background in neuroscience research, as well as, experience in behavioral tests, electrophysiology and imaging techniques will be a major advantage
  6. Fluency in English (written and spoken)

Required documents:

  1. Cover letter
  2. Copies of diplomas
  3. Curriculum vitae including a description of scientific and professional achievements and list of publications
