PhD Scholarship in Computer Science & Informatics

Apply now for a funded 3 year PhD scholarship, starting on 1 October 2020.  Overseas applicants must self-fund the difference between UK/EU and Overseas fees.

Significant investment has gone into the creation of Research Priority Areas to focus on emerging trends within our rapidly evolving discipline, and to provide additional vitality and agility by complementing the research groups:

• Data privacy and cybersecurity
• Distributed and parallel systems
• Human factors technology
• Knowledge Representation and Reasoning
• Social computing
• Text and data mining
• Quantum technologies and engineering

Several staff members take leading roles in local high-performance computing initiatives, which in turn give our students access to exceptional computing resources.

What is funded

Stipend equivalent to Research Council rates (£15,285 per annum in 2020/21), plus travel/conferences, support, consumables/equipment.

Tuition fees at the UK/EU rate (£4,407 per annum in 2020/21).

Overseas applicants must self-fund the difference between the above UK/EU rate and the Overseas rate (£21,950 per annum in 2020/21) each year. Specify how you will cover this in the Funding Source field and in your Personal Statement.

Students earn additional income supporting the School’s teaching (but not sufficient to fund the Overseas tuition fees).

Duration

3 years.

Eligibility

A 2:1 Honours undergraduate degree or a master's degree, in computing or a related subject. Applicants with appropriate professional experience are also considered. Degree-level mathematics (or equivalent) is required for research in some project areas.

Applicants for whom English is not their first language must demonstrate proficiency by obtaining an IELTS score of at least 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in each skills component.
